Better Light - Traditional incandescent vs. Full spectrum

The best light for reading is bright, natural, and glare free. Full spectrum light achieves this by delivering the "full" or "natural" light spectrum to your eye. Typical incandescent bulbs produce light only from the "warmer" red, yellow and orange parts of the visual spectrum, while completely missing the "cooler" colors of the blue portion of the spectrum. Unfortunately, for readers and society at large, this has resulted in a general acceptance of poor, yellowish light as the "norm" in homes and workplaces alike.

Way back in '56

Way back In 1956, in order to solve this problem, Verilux founder, Howard Scott, developed the "Trucolite®" as a way to produce the full spectrum of sunlight indoors. The Trucolite was a large fixture with six colored fluorescent tubes that, together, closely replicated natural sunlight. His invention was so revolutionary that it quickly became the standard in the gemological industry for diamond grading - an industry which clearly values a precise assessment of clarity, contrast and color. Over the next 30 years, Scott undertook considerable research and development producing an earth phosphor formula – the Trucolite® formula – that could be deployed in a single fluorescent tube - with even better results. That special Trucolite® formula of full spectrum phosphors is the technology being used in Verilux® bulbs and reading lamps today.

Verilux compact fluorescent (CFL) technology

The full line of Verilux reading lamps utilize our patented 27 watt "four finger" compact fluorescent bulb (CFL). This unique CFL, produces the equivalent of 150 watts of full spectrum light, lasts up to 10 times longer (10,000 hours) than incandescent bulbs, and consumes 80% less energy.
